Tuesday 15th February ’11.
I started the day by finding out how to compile a CV. I need to do this if I want to apply for the internship with Winsor and Newton . The outline sounds really interesting and I’m getting a bubble of excitement at the prospective of learning more about paint as well as getting paid for it.
This afternoon was Critical Practice; we were talking about artists and writers who use the form of the diary as a means of producing works and texts. Homework is writing our own diary for the next seven days of our lives in the art world, so here finishes my first entry, see you tomorrow.
Wednesday 16th February ’11.
Finished my CV and sent it to Paul (the tech guy at W+N), feel relieved I have done it, one less thing for me to worry about; it’s in the lap of the gods now.
Got some more work done on the money tree painting.
Thursday 17th February ’11.
Did some research on artists suggested to me that could relate to my work; Susan Hiller, Mamma Andersson and Navitrolla.
The interview with Susan Millar by Richard Grayson at the Tate was interesting, giving an insight to where she gets her ideas for her installations from.
I really like Mamma Andersson’s work, there’s something simplistic yet intricate about it, I need to do more research on her.
Navitrolla’s work makes me smile, the naïve childlike quality like Rousseau but Navitrolla’s palette is brighter and his subject matter although fantastical is contemporary and cleaner.
Friday 18th February ’11.
Had a painting tutorial this morning with Dolly Thompsett where several people presented their work to the group. There were some interesting artist statements and good work. I have enjoyed the last couple of week’s lectures, Dolly has a way of explaining herself so it is easy to take on board and you don’t feel bad about asking what seems like stupid questions. I feel more optimistic about this semester.
Saturday 19th February ’11.
I had a look around the Sesame gallery in Islington today, I thought the porcelain statuettes by Claire Partington were amusing, she had changed the head of a woman to a fox and the woman’s head lay by the figurines feet, like it had been decapitated.
I finished reading ‘A Portrait of a Primitive’ The Art of Henri Rousseau. I found this a really helpful read because combined with the other artists I have been looking at I feel I have found the genre in which my style of painting fits.
Sunday 20th February ’11.
I didn’t really do much today, apart from start to read a book about Peter Doig. His work has a mystical feel to it by the way he uses the colour and paint. Some of his paintings look metallic, great effect.
Monday 21st February ’11.
Critical Report tutorial this morning, we talked about who we intend to write our reports on, I think I’m basing mine around Henri Rousseau. I got some good suggestions from Chris, I just have to do some more studying so I can have the 500 word proposal to hand in next week.
