Interpretations
I decided to have a go at interpreting Frederick Delius's Koanga,'La Calinda'. The image that I envisioned was of a stream meandering it's way towards the sea and I wanted to depict movement and tone of the music through colour, i.e. lighter blues represented the smoother tones and slower pace of music played by the string and wind instruments. The roughly applied paint and darker tones appeared with the introduction of brass instruments and the quicker pace of the music. The colour studies below are an example of this, I also used a cocktail stick to create ripples.
It was at the point of experimenting with these next images, that I realised that I really didn't have a clue how colour worked. I felt like I was having problems creating shade, tone and depth. These look ok but not how I imagined. These are oil on chipwood.
I added sand to these images depicting floating instruments. Looking at them now I think I might be able to work with them again. I seemed to have created more depth than I gave myself credit for.
